Mu Dills Interview
Hailing from New Jersey's Brick City Mu Dills is on his grind. If self-belief and determination alone could guarantee stardom then this teenager would be up there slugging it out with Jay-Z and 50 Cent. Currently signed to indie label Monee Green Entertainment Mu Dills created a buzz with his first mixtape Grind City 1 which spawned the catchy Fresh N Fly. With world domination firmly in his sights EUT touched base with the young rapper to get the low-down on Mu Dills...
EUT: You're born and raised in Brickcity New Jersey. What made you choose music over street life?
Mu Dills: Yep born and raised in north New Jersey. Just coming up there was an opportunity. A good way to make something happen; open up some other doors not just for me but for other people. I just felt as though I could do it and people were telling me this is something you could do regardless of what's going on around. I just went in and made it happen.
EUT: You're signed to Monee Green Entertainment. What made you sign with them?
Mu Dills: I'd been rapping with a whole bunch of friends but then I started getting serious with it and they just brought me in. One day I called and they said, 'Yo man we've got the studio and the mic come on we've got everything set up'. I said, 'I can record and people gone hear me?' They said, 'Yeah man'. So I just came in from day one and started laying it down. The first song I did I named it Day One.
EUT: Which current hip hop artists are doing it for you right now?
Mu Dills: I'm listening to a lot. I'm hearing a lot of Lil Wayne out here. Right now the cat that's popping out here is the kid Maino; he's been doing his thing lately. There is a lot of music. But me I came up on hardcore music. All types of music like Geto Boys, Scarface, N.W.A. I was born around that hard music.
EUT: If you could battle any MC who would it be and why?
Mu Dills: Battle? I wouldn't battle anybody 'cause actually I've never battled nobody in my life. I never was a battle rapper. Me being where I come from and shit I never felt like battling was for me. It's a lot of face-to-face confrontation and the people you're battling spit in your face and you spit back in their face. I was never into that. I never battled nobody in my life. So there's nobody in particular that I would want to battle.
EUT: You released your debut album late last year...
Mu Dills: I haven't released my debut album. It was mixtapes. My last mixtape was Grind City. I'm releasing a lot of independent music on my mixtapes. The mixtapes are Grind City 1,2 & 3. My next mixtape is Brick Therapy - DJ King Nade is hosting it. I'm just finishing up another one now with DJ King Philly from New York. I'm working on another one with DJ L Boogie from North Carolina. I've been really flipping the mixtape thing right now. I've just finished a track with the title Raincheck featuring Lil Kim. Yeah me and Kim laid that down; it's a hot record. We be hitting the underground scene real hard.
EUT: Do you have a time limit for the release of your LP?
Mu Dills: I don't really have a time limit but I'm thinking some time this Winter or something like that. I'm just building up the anticipation right now. I want everybody to cling on to me more. I'm getting a lot of good feedback I can't complain about it. People are saying I'm the next to bring the east coast back so it is what it is.
EUT: That's a lot of pressure...
Mu Dills: I just keep it moving and roll with it.
EUT: You're still very young. What do you think sets you apart from other artists?
Mu Dills: I always say this you wouldn't know how old I am anyway I've been 12 going on 20. I've always had an old soul. I rap for the streets. I write from the heart. I'm an artist; artists paint pictures. Me being an artist I rap about all different types of situations. I can speak to different people. I just take it on that level right there.
EUT: Your name certainly stands out. What is the Mu short for?
Mu Dills: The Mu is my nickname. The streets and everybody always called me Mu so that just kind of stuck with me. I was always a short kid so they called me Mu; I was 5'9'' with a heart that's 6,000 square feet (laughs). Like I said once again me being an artist I just put the Dills to it which means Delivering-Inspiration and Living-Life-Successfully.
EUT: If I was to visit New Jersey what spots would you recommend I visit?
Mu Dills: If you came to my hometown of New Jersey we could go catch a baseball game down at the Bears stadium. We got clubs out here; Clevelands, Sugar Reef. It's basically in north Jersey. We could go down north and catch a New Jersey Devil's hockey game.
EUT: You've got Six Flags out there too...
Mu Dills: Oh yeah definitely! We can go to Six Flags and get splashed and hit the water park up. Or Wildwood; we could go down and get on the jet skis at Wildwood. If you ever come here we gone have a good time best believe that. I've been thinking about getting a Monee Green amusement park one of these days (laughs).
EUT: What if anything, do you hope to achieve by the end of the year?
Mu Dills: I definitely want to have my album out. I want to be a #1 artist. I want to have a #1 album. I want to have a #1 record out; I want to be #1 on Billboard. I definitely set my goals and I've definitely set my goals to make my first million and use that million to make more millions. I always think that whatever you truly believe in you can make it happen. My mother always told me nothing beats a failure but a try so I always went with it. I believe in that sincerely and I always put my spirit over my ego. I let go all my fears all my doubts. That's something I'm trying to learn how to do. When you hold on to all your fears and you deal with 'what ifs' then that's what you are going to bring to yourself. I always tell myself that I can do this.
EUT: You did an ad campaign for Azzure clothing. What was that like?
Mu Dills: It was something good for me. Actually I thought I was gonna be just modelling clothes but they had this thing going on where they had different artists and you dressed up like a legend...a back in the day artist. They had me playing Slick Rick. They tucked my beard in I had the Slick Rick patch on my eye and the gold chains. It was honoured to play Slick Rick; a legend that laid down the foundations of this hip hop game.
EUT: Complete the sentence...I'm Fresh and I'm Fly because...
Mu Dills: I'mma tell you why I'm fresh and fly. Every morning I wake up and I get in the mirror I always make sure that before I leave out the house I'm completely clean. I make sure that my face is shaped up. I make sure that I'm presentable to the public and me being that way is just fresh and fly; basically I want to feel good. So, anybody can be fresh and fly. Actually I got it from my little brother. My little brother lives with me and I was in the bathroom and I was washing up and brushing my teeth or whatever and he buss' in the bathroom. He's got a tendency of just bussin' doors - so he buss' in the door and I was in the mirror just putting my jewellery on and he was like, 'ok, you fresh and fly alright'. So I've got to big up to my little brother.
